What is Migraine?

Migraines are painful, recurring and severe headaches, which can cause throbbing pain and pulsating sensation, and mostly occurs only on one side of the head. The pain due to migraines can last for hours to several days. Generally, some people get a warning sign also known as the aura, before the migraine attack, which can be either flash of light or blind spots.

Generally, the symptoms of migraine begin from early childhood and divided into four stages on the basis of progress.

These stages are prodrome, aura, attack, and post-drome. It is not necessary one has to pass through the other stages to reach a particular stage.

Let’s discuss these stages one by one:

1. Prodrome:

A person may feel some warning symptoms or signs one or two days of the upcoming migraine. These includes:

  • Constipation
  • Mood disorders, from euphoria to depression.
  • Cravings for food
  • Stiffness in neck
  • Increase in urination and thirst
  • Increase in yawning

2. Aura

Many people experience an aura before the occurrence of migraines. These are the reversible symptoms of the nervous system. Generally, they are visual, however, can include other disturbances. Every symptom can last for 20 to 60 minutes in this phase.

  1. Visual problems such as seeing different shapes, flashes, or bright spots.
  2. Loss in vision
  3. Pin or needles sensation in the legs.
  4. Weakness or numbness in the body.
  5. Speaking problems.
  6. Hearing problems

3. Attack

Generally, a migraine attack lasts for 4 to 72 hours. The occurrence frequency of migraine varies from person to person. It could occur rarely or several times in a month.

The common symptoms in the attack are:

  • Pain generally on a single side of the head or maybe on both sides.
  • Throbbing or pulsating pain.
  • Sensitivity to sound, light.
  • Vomiting and nausea.

4. Postdrome

After a migraine attack, the person will feel drained, exhausted, washed out, and confused for nearly a day. The sudden head movement might cause pain again.
