What is a Stroke?
A stroke happens when blood flow to the part of your brain is cut down. Cells in that part of the brain don’t get required oxygen and they begin to die. There can be two reasons behind the cut down of blood flow. Firstly, a blood vessel is closed, for example, due to a blood clot, or when a blood vessel bursts or tears up. It causes bleeding around or in the brain.
An abrupt harsh headache can be a signal of stroke. Other common signs of stroke are –
- Trouble in speaking and in understanding others.
- The problem of vision in one or both the eyes.
- Confusion, mess, and disorder.
- Weakness or numbness, specifically on the one side of the body.
- Suddenly feeling dizziness or loss in coordination or balance.
The type of stroke which is misunderstood for migraine by people is known as Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA). It is also called mini-stroke. The reason is the blood flow to the brain is blocked for a very small period. Symptoms of a mini-stroke are less harsh compared to sign of stroke and the duration is mostly less than one hour.
The difference between Stroke, and Migraine
It can be very difficult to identify the difference between a mini-stroke and migraine with aura. Here are some points you can consider to identify it –
- A stroke will have possibly have called “negative” symptoms like – you can’t feel one of your feet or hands or you may lose sight of one of your eyes. A migraine will possibly have positive symptoms, it means additional sensation, like – tingling in your skin or flashes in your vision.
- In a stroke, signs generally show up suddenly. In migraine, signs happen slowly. Headache is small in the beginning and gets more severe after some time.
- If you at a young stage, it’s probably a migraine and if you are 4o or older then there is a high possibility of it being a stroke, especially in case you have never experienced migraine or irregular heartbeat or high blood pressure.
